The Four That Control (Almost) Every Candidate Inbox

Here’s something most recruiters don’t stop to think about. When you send a campaign to 10,000 candidates… You’re not sending to 10,000 different mailbox providers.

You’re mostly sending to four. I call them the MAGY4:

  • Microsoft
  • Apple
  • Google
  • Yahoo Inc.

Between them, they power almost every free mailbox a candidate will ever use. Unless someone’s on a custom domain (their own company email, for example), the odds are overwhelming that their inbox lives inside one of those four ecosystems.

Why This Matters for Deliverability

If you’re seeing reputation issues at Microsoft, Apple, Google or Yahoo, you’re not dealing with a small corner of your database. You could be affecting the majority of it.

So the obvious question becomes: How many of my candidates sit inside each of these ecosystems?

To answer that, you need to know which domains each provider actually controls. And this is where it gets interesting.

Simple vs “We Bought Half the Internet”

Apple and Google?
Pretty clean. A handful of core domains each.

Microsoft and Yahoo?
Different story.

They’ve spent years acquiring, merging, rebranding and absorbing other services. Which means the list of domains that roll up into those ecosystems is… sizeable. And if you don’t know that:

  • You might think Hotmail is separate from Outlook (it isn’t — Microsoft).
  • You might forget that AOL sits under Yahoo.
  • You might miscalculate how exposed you are to a single provider’s reputation filtering.

That’s why I’ve put a full domain breakdown in the table below.

The Point of This List

This isn’t trivia. It’s operational. If Microsoft reputation dips, and 42% of your database sits inside Microsoft-owned domains, that’s not a “minor issue”. That’s a pipeline problem.

Same logic for Yahoo. Same for Google. Same for Apple.

Understanding the MAGY4 means you know where your exposure sits, you know which provider’s filtering behaviour matters most and you can prioritise diagnostics properly

A Quick Reality Check

Most “deliverability issues” aren’t evenly distributed. They cluster by provider. So before you panic about “inbox placement overall”, check:

  • What percentage of your database is Microsoft?
  • What percentage is Google?
  • How many Yahoo legacy domains are sitting in your CRM?
  • How much Apple Mail usage are you seeing?

Then match that against where reputation or engagement is dropping. That’s when the pattern usually reveals itself.

You might think these four play the consumer mailbox pretty evenly. Well, no. They don’t More on that here.

About the List Below

The domain table underneath this intro:

  • Was updated in 2025
  • Covers the primary domains owned/operated by each MAGY provider
  • Will be updated periodically as acquisitions and rebrands happen

Because if there’s one thing Microsoft and Yahoo love, it’s renaming something you’d just got used to.

Credit to Al Iverson for providing this. Al’s notes:

  • These are CONSUMER mailboxes only, the primary domains where free webmail access is provided.
  • Some entries are found based on MX record or MX domain matches and could be slightly inaccurate, but this should still be fine for domain segmentation and MTA configuration purposes.
  • Apple’s private relay domain is not included, it is “privaterelay.appleid.com”
  • Google has only two consumer webmail domains. They do not have other localized domains around the world for email, even though they own many alternate domains.
  • Yahoo domains include AOL, Cox.net, and Verizon.net.
  • The Yahoo list does not include AT&T domains, because they have a different inbound MX (mail) server, even though the mail is accessed by users using the Yahoo Mail webmail system.
